For God has not given us a spirit of fear, but of power and of love and of a sound mind.

2 Timothy 1:7 NKJV

Have you ever had to answer the question, “Where will you be in five years? Where do you see yourself?” I used to hate that question. I would lean heavily on the scriptures that remind us to focus on things daily (Hebrews 13:3, Matthew 6:11 and 34, Psalms 88:9 to name a few) to justify my refusal to answer that question (or any like it). Then a nonfiction essay I wrote was chosen by Enchanted Conversations (my favorite digital fairy tale magazine).

I love writing, but I have always been a bit self-conscious about it. Making a future or having one with writing was not something I saw. And honestly I was scared to see it. But God did not give us a spirit of fear. He gave us power, love, and a sound mind. So when Enchanted Conversations asked for nonfiction pieces, I prayed and God gave me a topic.

As I researched and wrote, it all came together and I got so excited. When it was done and edited, I entered it as a submission. Then I had a minor freak out. The last research paper I wrote was two years ago in college. What if I cited it wrong? Or was it too short? Should I have gone with a different topic? All these questions ran through my head like a tornado.

Then God whispered that He gave me power, love, and a sound mind. It was that sound mind that gave me the idea and helped me create the essay. God helped me create my essay. Whether it was chosen or not, God would get the glory.

And it was chosen!

I was so excited! I told my parents confidently that writing could be in my future. Along with being a teacher in a small town or small city. For once, I could see where I could be in five years and I wanted to be there. Even when I didn’t know where and what I wanted to be, God did. And His plan is better and more fulfilling than anything I could see.

So, thank you, God, for the vision of my future and the small moments that will get me there. And thank you Enchanted Conversations for choosing my essay.
