“For this reason we also, since the day we heard it, do not cease to pray for you, and to ask that you may be filled with the knowledge of His will in all wisdom and spiritual understanding; that you may walk worthy of the Lord, fully pleasing Him, being fruitful in every good work and increasing in the knowledge of God.”

— Colossians 1:9–10 (NKJV)

Recently, I entered a logo design contest. While I can’t share my entries because of a privacy policy, I can share the journey God took me on through it.

When I first saw the poster, I felt a nudge from God to join. I already worked for the company and admired their values. Plus an image immediately came to mind — a butterfly lifting off from a shirt. I couldn’t get it out of my head!

So I began designing. I created one that looked like a butterfly, others that played with shapes and colors, and one that was simple and straightforward. To me, that last one felt dull — almost too plain.

When I submitted them to my boss, she loved them. But when the winning design came in, it wasn’t one of my butterflies. It was the plain one.

I showed it to my mom, and she smiled.

“That makes sense,” she said. “It’s the clearest design.”

Her words stopped me in my tracks. The clearest design was the one that best reflected the company’s identity — not my creative flair. I had been focused on what looked impressive, but the real beauty was in clarity and purpose.

That’s when God whispered a truth to my heart:

He doesn’t ask us to be pleasing to our eyes. He calls us to be pleasing, sincere, and real in Him.

How often do we try to make things more “beautiful” or “perfect,” when God simply asks for obedience and authenticity? Sometimes, we’re chasing butterflies when He’s already made His will clear.

No more chasing butterflies. Just listen. Just hold on to Him.

Moral of the Story:

God values clarity of heart over complexity of presentation. When we walk in His will, even simple obedience can become something beautiful.

Prayer

Lord, thank You for reminding me that simplicity in Your will is far more beautiful than complexity in my own. Help me to stop chasing what dazzles my eyes and instead walk clearly in the light of Your truth. Amen.
