“If we confess our sins, He is faithful and just to forgive us our sins and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness.”
I John 1:9 NKJV
Locked Doors
Two employees of a big company had forgotten their keys to their offices. One employee informed their Boss of his mistake. The Boss sent for a locksmith and told the employee to wait for the locksmith then stay later to make up the time.
Hearing this, the other employee found a quick way to open the door himself. He used and finagled a car key into the door and got the door open. He went in on time and did not have to make up for lost time.
The other employee did wait for a locksmith to come over. The locksmith had come two hours later than expected. So after the door was opened, that employee went in and went straight to work. Later on, when everyone else went home, that employee had to stay an extra two hours longer.
That night, the car key employee was thankful that he forced his door open with another key. Though he did have to finagle with the lock the next day. The other employee was tired and worn out from his long day but, he remembered to bring his keys.
A month later, a thief broke into the company and stole files from one of the offices. It was found that the files missing were from the car key employee’s office. After catching the thief, the thief reported stealing from the easiest office that opened without force. The car key employee said that was a lie since he locked his door before leaving the office.
The Boss had the car key employee’s door checked. The lock clicked and seemed to work, but no matter what key was used, the lock did not move. The locksmith reported that another key was used and forced the lock out of alignment. A foreign key broke the lock.
The Boss asked the thief and the car key employee if they used a foreign key on the door. The thief said no. The car key employee also said no, wanting to hide his mistake, and blamed the thief for lying. Do the Boss checked the cameras.
What the car key employee had done was revealed. The Boss asked why the car key employee did not inform anyone. He said because he thought he could handle it on his own and not face any consequences.
The thief faced the consequence of breaking into the office by paying a fine and returning the stolen items. The car key employee faced the consequence of avoiding reporting his mistake by getting demoted, losing his office, being put on a probationary period, and assisting the other employee. The other employee faced the consequence of reporting his mistake by one day of late work, then gaining an assistant.
Moral of the story:
You can never avoid consequences. So face them honestly rather than run and letting the consequences build.
